We Are Still Here: Exhibition

The Art Gallery is proud to present WE ARE STILL HERE: 
a multi-media exhibit on the historic American Indian occupation of Alcatraz Island.

In 2009, a group of SFSU students, in collaboration with native leaders, faculty from San Francisco State University and students from California State University East Bay conducted interviews of historians, native scholars and activists and documented the 40th anniversary of the historic 19-month American Indian occupation of Alcatraz Island.  The multi-media exhibit contains photographs of the 40th anniversary occupation celebration; an audio landscape with excerpts from interviews of Alcatraz veterans and activists; a collage of contemporary and archival footage; and original art. 

• 12:00 noon, Art Gallery: exhibit opens with blessing, special guests and student exhibitors                       
• 6:00pm, Jack Adams Hall: cultural program, special guests, refreshments
• 7:30pm, Jack Adams Hall: film, Alcatraz Is Not An Island

WE ARE STILL HERE is co-sponsored by the Cesar Chavez Institute, SFSU; Department of American Indian Studies, SFSU; Department of Ethnic Studies, CSU East Bay; International Indian Treaty Council; Richard Oakes Multi-Cultural Center; SKINS; and The Cultural Conservancy.
The Art Gallery at San Francisco State University is a student-run, student-funded, non-profit space sponsored by the San Francisco University Student Association.  The Gallery is dedicated to bringing the visual and interdisciplinary arts to the multicultural student body at SFSU, through diverse series of exhibitions by both students and non-students.
