COME TOGETHER is a celebration of the collective work of 31 disparate designers, linked by the practice of transdisciplinary design. It is an event, two years in the making, in which our unique lines of thought, processes, and methodologies converge and intersect in one final exhibition.

Stefan Sagmeister: The Happy Show - ICA - Institute of Contemporary Art - Philadelphia, PA

"I am usually rather bored with definitions," Sagmeister says. "Happiness, however, is just such a big subject that it might be worth a try to pin it down." Centered around the designer's ten-year exploration of happiness, this exhibition presents typographic investigations of a series of maxims, or rules to live by, originally culled from Sagmeister's diary, manifested in a variety of imaginative and interactive forms.

The work of politically engaged artist Gerd Arntz (1900-1988) has a great visual impact and is full of information. This motivated sociologist and philosopher Otto Neurath to invite Arntz around 1922 to design the symbols for his system for visual education Isotype. Arntz designed more than 3000 symbols. Still today we can see the influence of these symbols which can be seen as radically reduced information. Many on- and off line communication designers today perceive Gerd Arntz as the godfather for visual communication. The brilliant artist and craftsman Arntz was a master in reduction and a sharing idealist. This exhibition gives insight in the work of Gerd Arntz as politically engaged artist on the one hand and as designer of timeless symbols on the other hand. (http://www.gerdarntz.org/)

Rearranging the Syntax of a Design Vocabulary
SFSU Design and Industry students enrolled in Mimi Sheiner’s DAI-300 Design Process class over the past academic year were asked to create lamps and chairs using non-traditional, re-purposed materials. The result is not merely a showcase of technical craftsmanship. Rather, it is a series of startling and often humorous insights into a changing era of design that is shifting its vision to gaze on a greener future while demanding unconventional innovations in order for survival.

Reverb: Notes on Design, is the 22nd annual DAI student exhibition. We have extended the deadline for submissions. Please be sure to fill out and print the submission form online at http://daishow.sfsu.edu/submit/ before April 28, 2011. All instructions are available on the online form. Please include the printed form along with your work. All projects can be submitted to FA 151, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. If you do not have access to the work right away please fill out the form anyway to get started.

Although the western world was hit unaware, the disease had been coursing through the third world’s bloodstream for years before. When Europe and the Americas were directly impacted, however, curative and preventative measures were gradually instituted and awareness began—much of it through posters."

GAFTA Exhibition: OPEN

Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (GAFFTA) is pleased to announce its Inaugural Exhibition, OPEN, featuring the works of C.E.B. Reas, Camille Utterback and Stamen Design. Including new works from three pioneers in the field of digital art, OPEN celebrates GAFFTA’s arrival as San Francisco’s leading digital arts organization and cornerstone of The City’s emerging Tenderloin Arts District.

OPEN commences with a series of fundraising events, public celebrations and workshops October 1st – 4th, with related programming running through November 18th (see full calendar of Grand Opening events below).

The multidisciplinary works in OPEN span a range of formats and techniques: from prints and sculptures to interactive video, generative processes and cartography. While the styles of each featured artists are unique and diverse, all the works in GAFFTA’s Inaugural Exhibition exemplify the core values of our organization’s creative vision and civic mission: technology, community and openness.

Cartographic Imagination/An Atlas

The twin exhibitions Cartographic Imagination: Mapping in Contemporary California Art and An Atlas unfold the beauty, mystery and hidden meanings behind maps, on display simultaneously. The 28 works help find the way about a range of a host of environmental and social issues from all angles, including criminal justice, human rights, politics and more.

Cartographic Imagination

Cartographic Imagination is a new show exploring maps as both image and cipher, in media including photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, new technologies, performance and installation. The exhibition intends to expand the long history of the conceptual use of mapping in art into 21st century expressions and practice.


An Atlas

An Atlas is a traveling exhibition of artists working with “radical cartography”—a practice that uses maps and mapping to promote social change, and that is part of a cultural movement linking art, geography and activism. The participating artists, architects and collectives play with cartographic conventions—geographic shapes, wayfinding symbols, and aerial views—to take on issues from globalization to garbage.
